Educator FAQ

What is a NuKase?

– The NuKase is a secure, transparent, lockable case designed to store a student’s powered-off mobile phone, eliminating distractions. It can be unlocked using a unique magnetic unlocking station.

Why are schools introducing NuKase?

– Students frequently face distractions from their phones, making it difficult for teachers to teach and for students to learn. School districts across the country have recognized the need for action and have implemented phone policies, though these are often difficult to enforce. The NuKase™ provides educators with an effective tool to enforce these policies by keeping students’ phones out of reach, thereby allowing a much-needed digital break that helps refocus on learning and engagement.

How does it work?

– At the school entrance, students turn off their phones, place them in the NuKase, and slide the locking bar closed, a loud “click” verifies the case is now locked and the phone is secure. At dismissal, students can easily unlock their phones by tapping the locking bar at the NuKase unlocking station. Unlocking stations can be located within each classroom, at exit areas or a combination of both.

Why don’t zero-tolerance policies work?

– Zero-tolerance policies are reactive rather than preventative. They place the burden of enforcement on teachers, who end up spending valuable instruction time dealing with cell phones instead of teaching.

What happens after the phone is secured in the NuKase?

– The secured phone remains with the student, who is responsible for its safety. The school does not assume responsibility for the security of the phones. This helps reduce the change of theft and misplacement.

Is there an annual cost associated with the NuKase?

– No, the NuKase is durable and designed for the school environment. It requires only a one-time purchase and has no annual fees.

Why is the case transparent?

– Transparency allows schools to quickly verify that a cell phone is inside the case, speeding up school entry and preventing students from sneaking prohibited items into school or the classroom.

What happens if there is an emergency at school?

– In an emergency, students are trained to stay focused on listening to directions rather than being distracted by their cell phones. NuGerm’s Unlocking Stations are mobile, so phones can be unlocked when students are safe and the emergency is over.

What if a parent or guardian needs to reach their child during the school day?

– We understand that emergencies do happen, and schools should call the front office to get in touch with their child as needed.

What if a student needs their personal device for a medical issue?

– An alternative case, the NuKey,  that allows for access will be provided

How can students distinguish their individual NuKase from others?

– Thanks to the NuKase’s transparent design, students can easily spot their own phones, minimizing mix-ups. Additionally, the NuKase comes with student ID labels that are placed on the case to assist with identification.

Can a student get into the NuKase?

– The NuKase is shatterproof, nearly unbreakable, pick-resistant, and requires an unlocking station to open.  Attempting to force open the NuKase will damage both the case and potentially the phone inside, rendering the case unusable. Students will be required to purchase a replacement if they damage their case.

If a student forgets to unlock the NuKase before leaving the building, is there a way for students to unlock the case?

– The student will need to return to campus to unlock the case. Any attempt to force open the NuKase will damage the case, making it unusable and may  damage the phone locked inside.
